The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is pleased to announce the launch of WavyOcean 2.0, an immersive digital twin platform of regional earth system. This upgraded platform deeply integrates digital technologies with innovative research in Earth system, creating the first "dynamic digital mirror" for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) and China's coastal regions. With these enhancement, WavyOcean 2.0 offers the latest data on ocean currents, marine ecology, atmospheric conditions, and the distribution of rivers and pollutants in terrestrial watersheds, along with comprehensive data analysis tools and immersive visualization interactive functions.

From October 21 to 23, 2024, the 3rd Hong Kong and Macao Ocean & Areas of Excellence (AoE) Forum were successfully held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. With the theme of "Earth System Science for Climate Change, Carbon Neutrality and Blue Economy", the forum aims to promote academic exchange and cooperation in regional earth system science study. The forum was jointly organized by the AoE project "Study of the regional earth system for sustainable development under climate change in the Greater Bay Area" (Earth-HK), Center for Ocean Research in Hong Kong and Macau (CORE) and the Department of Ocean Science of HKUST, gathered experts and scholars from various areas to discuss cutting-edge issues in ocean research.

On October 8-9, 2024, the High-level Forum for Strategically Developing a Sustainable Blue Economy in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area under the Vision of Carbon Neutrality, organized by the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED), was held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), with Earth-HK as one of the co-sponsors. The forum included a one-day "Workshop on Sustainable Blue Economy in the Greater Bay Area for Carbon Neutrality" and a half-day "Strategic Dialogue on Coordinated Development and Integrated Ocean Management in the Greater Bay Area".

Upwelling is a key driver of physical, biogeochemical, and ecological variability in coastal regions, bringing cold, nutrient-rich deep water into the euphotic zone and thriving marine ecosystems. The wind-induced Ekman frictional effect cannot completely explain the observed spatial and temporal variations of the upwelling.

From July 11 to August 3, 2024, Earth-HK research teams conducted a 24-day scientific expedition along the coast of the Greater Bay Area. This expedition brought together a total of 32 teachers and students from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, The University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), and several universities from mainland China. They carried out investigations at over 90 operational sites in areas such as the Pearl River channel, the Pearl River Estuary, and coastal regions of Guangdong Province (from Shangchuan Island to Daya Bay).
