Members of Earth-HK Project Win Gold Medal at the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva

2026-03-15

On March 11–15, 2026, Professor Jianping GAN, Project Coordinator of Earth-HK, led his team to participate for the first time in the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, where they successfully won a gold medal. During the event, they showcased their latest scientific achievement: the "Science and AI-Empowered Digital Twin Visualization of Ocean System."

This innovative digital platform, developed under the leadership of Professor GAN from the Department of Ocean Science at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, dynamically integrates geographic information systems (GIS) with high-fidelity rendering of ultra-large-scale data. It provides a geographic digital twin platform and 3D immersive visualization technology for ocean and Earth systems, enabling the construction of real-time, interactive, and immersive 3D visualization models that capture dynamic changes in coastal and marine environments. The system converts complex scientific data into intuitive, easy-to-understand visual information, supporting both scientific research and decision-making.

A key technological breakthrough of the platform is its global connectivity: it is the world's first 3D rendering engine that supports real-time synchronized rendering of geographic information and data. With unprecedented speed and clarity, it helps researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders grasp dynamic ocean changes.

The system has a wide range of applications, including tracking ocean currents, marine species distribution, pollution levels, and simulating temporal changes in the Greater Bay Area waters. The platform also offers multiple exportable analytical variables, unlocking the scientific codes behind the data. It provides concrete imagery, video, and analytical support for the marine economy, ecological protection, policy formulation, and public education.

Professor GAN remarked, "We are thrilled to bring our innovations to the international stage in Geneva. This digital twin platform not only advances marine science research but also provides society with a scientific tool to balance economic development and environmental protection."

The International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva is one of the world's most influential invention exhibitions. The CORE team's participation highlights the Center's prominent role in the field of marine science and technology, as well as its ongoing commitment to impactful research.
