Earth-HK Opening Ceremony and First Symposium

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the highly anticipated opening ceremony and first symposium of the EARTH-HK project on 22 and 23 March 2024. The event brought together esteemed researchers, policymakers, and project members to discuss and share progress in environmental research and development.

The opening ceremony commenced with an inspiring speech delivered by Prof. Tim Cheng, the Vice-President for Research and Development at HKUST. Prof. Cheng highlighted the significance of the EARTH-HK project and the continuous support of scientific research from HKUST. The attendees were captivated by his vision and commitment to advancing scientific knowledge.

The symposium saw an impressive turnout, with more than 60 participants from various disciplines and organizations. The event garnered substantial attention and recognition, as policymakers from influential government bodies like the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD), Environmental Protection Department (EPD), and Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) were present. Their presence underscored the importance of collaboration between academia and policymakers in addressing environmental issues.

Throughout the symposium, Project Co-Principal Investigators (Co-PIs) and Co-Investigators (Co-Is) took the stage to deliver presentations on their ongoing research progress and plans for the upcoming year. Their reports showcased the breadth and depth of the scientific work being conducted under the EARTH-HK project. The audience engaged in vibrant discussions, offering valuable insights and suggestions to further enhance the research outcomes.

In addition to the scientific sessions, the project team held a comprehensive management meeting. This internal gathering provided an opportunity for the team members to discuss project management aspects, such as coordination, resource allocation, and policies.
